Finishes
Malibu - Boys roomUltimately, after making the decision to invest in shutters for your home or business, the hardest decision will be, 'Which finish ?'. Malibu offers a wide range of finishes and we can even mix custom paints and washes to suit wall colour or architraves etc. To view a small sample of the finishes we offer, check out our interactive colour picker.

Lacquer
The timber is prepared for clear lacquer, giving a soft looking satin finish. This finish also brings out the attractive wood grain in the Western Red Cedar.

Hand-rubbed Limewash
The raw timber can be finished with a standard or coloured limewash. This finish highlights the grain whilst providing the opportunity to add colour to the shutters. After the limewash is applied, several coats of clear lacquer applied, resulting in a beautiful satin finish.

Painted
The raw timber shutters can be spray-painted to suit. Custom colours can be mixed to match wall or architraves.

Natural Oil
A natural oil finish is ideal for exterior shutters. Whereas any other finish may degrade due to exposure to the elements, an oil finish will keep the timber in good condition.

Materials
Timber
All Malibu shutters are crafted from air dried Western Red Cedar, a plantation timber imported from North America. Why do we go to such trouble to get this specific timber ? We use Western Red Cedar (WRC) for the following reasons:

  • WRC is stable, this means it will not warp (vitally important).
  • Light weight, therefore can be used for doors and large panel sections.
  • Attractive grain. WRC is knot free with a grain well suited to lacquer or varnish.
  • Insulating Properties. Shutters will therefore help reduce heat in summer & keep heat in during during winter.
  • Durable. As WRC is knot-free, the timber has few weak points, making it more durable.
Shutter blades, stiles & rails, tilt rods & pelmets are all made from timber providing a very attractive overall package.

Sundry components
Malibu use only the best quality components in the production of our shutters. To affix the shutter blades to the timber stiles, we use Teflon pins imported from the United States. As you may know, Teflon is a high-tech composite material valued for its nonstick properties, therefore ensuring that our shutters tilt easily years after installation.

Malibu - BedroomThe timber Tilt bar (sometimes called Control Bar) attaches to the timber blades with stainless steel staples. This prevents rust whist being strong and therefore further prolonging the life of your shutters.

Brass-plated Radius butt hinges are used if required. For a little extra cost, we can instead use Stainless-steel hinges.

By using high quality timber and other components, we feel confident that our shutters will last for many years. In fact, we're so confident that we have no hesitation in offering a 5 year warranty on all moving parts. Another beneficial consequence of our use of quality components is that Malibu shutters require no maintenance, only a regular clean or dusting.

Production
Upon acceptance and confirmation of shutter measurements and design specifications we begin production of your shutters.

Firstly we select appropriate lengths of timber, then we measure and cut. The shutter blades are specially crafted to achieve the unique aerofoil shape. After the timber lengths are cut to fit, they are sanded and prepared for finishing.

Timber components are individually finished before assembly therefore creating a quality product, i.e. no 'missed bits'.

All joints are doweled and glued, leading to a solid and durable product. The shutters are then assembled and undergo quality control, ready to be installed.
